VENUE & TIME: WIN Stadium, Friday, June 15, 7.45pm (AEST), 9.45pm (NZT)
HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 23, Dragons 10, Bulldogs 13
LAST TIME:Bulldogs 30-4, March 10, 2012
MISSING IN ACTION: Dragons coach Steve Price has named the same side that went down to Manly in their last match, with only a minor tweak, naming Dean Young off the bench to start at lock in what will be his 200th NRL game. The Bulldogs have been forced into a reshuffle after yet another long-term injury to one of their backs. Impressive centre Tim Lafai has had season-ending shoulder surgery which means in-form Krisnan Inu shifts from the wing to the centres with Luke MacDougall recalled on the flank. Back-rower Greg Eastwood returns from a hamstring injury, pushing David Stagg back to the bench. Both sides will be hoping their Origin contingent pulls up OK from Wednesday night’s brutal clash with Ben Creagh, Trent Merrin (both Dragons) and Josh Morris (Bulldogs) all hopeful of playing.
FORM: It’s reaching desperation stage for the Dragons who have fallen down the ladder after just one win in their last five games – and even that was a lucky 14-12 victory over a struggling Parramatta. They have fought hard in all of those games but have just lacked a cutting edge to get over the line. They showed glimpses of their potential in the 20-8 loss to Manly last time out but will need to improve significantly to stop the red-hot Bulldogs.
Canterbury seems to have overcome their mini-slump to be back in the top four after three straight wins. There had been questions marks over the Bulldogs’ ability to beat top four sides but they answered that question with their hard-fought win over South Sydney a fortnight ago. The Bulldogs thrashed the Dragons 30-4 when they met earlier this season with Josh Morris grabbing a first-half hat-trick.
FOR THE DRAGONS TO WIN: Find a way to cross the stripe. There’s no doubting the dour Dragons know how to defend with the fourth-best defence in the NRL and conceding the fewest line-breaks. But with the ball in their hands they seem to be lost and have no structure. They will need to change that quickly, especially against the free-scoring Bulldogs. Jamie Soward’s kicking game will be vital while Brett Morris will be looking to step-up his attacking game to push his cause for a potential wing berth in Origin III with Akuila Uate struggling for form.
FOR THE BULLDOGS TO WIN: Not much needs to change for Des Hasler’s side. They’ve won three on the spin, have all their key players in form and are oozing confidence. Inu has been a revelation while Ben Barba is arguably the player of the year so far in both defence and attack and is a strong chance for Origin III with an injury cloud over Billy Slater. The Dragons right-side defence has been suspect all season so it won’t hurt to get the ball to Frank Pritchard and Inu on that side as often as possible.
