Preview: Hello and welcome to Silverstone, England, as we get ready for the running of the British Grand Prix. This is the ninth round of the season and Alonso comes in with a 20 point advantage over Webber in the driver standings.

Yesterday, qualifying had to be extended due to a lengthy rain delay but no one could rain on Alonso's parade as the Spaniard romped to his first pole of the season, beating Webber by less than a tenth of a second.

Schumacher qualified third and will line up next to Vettel on the second row, ahead of Massa and Raikkonen in fifth and sixth. Maldonado was seventh fastest while Hamilton qualified an uncharacteristic eighth.

Hulkenberg qualified ninth but will start 14th due to a grid penalty for a gearbox change so Grosjean will line up ninth while di Resta will round out the top-10 starters.

Also given grid penalties were Kobayashi and Vergne, five and ten place penalties respectively for their roles in incidents caused at the previous round in Valencia.

23 drivers qualified on time but Pic's time fell short of the 107 percent rule so he will be allowed to race only at the stewards' discretion.

Silverstone has been a part of the Formula One calender since the very first season in 1950. Located on what used to be an airfield, speed has always been the cornerstone of Silverstone. Even the current layout consists mostly of high speed bends with quick changes in direction so aerodynamic perfection and high speed stability will be key.

The option tyre compound this weekend will be soft (yellow sidewall) while the prime compound will be hard (silver sidewall).

There is only one DRS zone this week, with the detection zone located in the braking zone for Turn 3 while the activation zone will be located between Turns 4 and 5.

Rain could be on the cards at some point in the race.
