Sydney Roosters vs South Sydney Rabbitohs VENUE & TIME: Allianz Stadium – Monday, July 16, 7pm AEDT, 9pm (NZT)
HEAD TO HEAD Played 204 – Roosters 93, Rabbitohs 106, Drawn 5
LAST TIME: Roosters 24-20, March 5, 2012 MISSING IN ACTION: The Roosters will be without prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves after he was unsuccessful at the NRL judiciary on Wednesday night. Coach Brian Smith is yet to name a replacement. The Tri-Colours do get skipper Braith Anasta back after he missed the Sharks clash with an infection in his face. The Rabbitohs have named an unchanged line-up, with Dave Tyrrell and Ben Lowe added to the squad on a six-man interchange bench. FORM: It’s been a tough couple of months for the Roosters with just one win in their last seven matches to see their finals hopes fade away. They were poor against Cronulla on Monday night but stayed in the contest long enough to grab a late try and force the season’s first draw. The Bondi-club will need to improve significantly to have any hope of getting near the Bunnies. Souths kept up the chase for a top four berth, beating Newcastle 34-14 last Sunday on the back of another Adam Reynolds-inspired victory. The Rabbitohs will be desperate to get one back on their fierce rivals after the Roosters scored two tries in the last three minutes to win their round one encounter this season.
FOR THE ROOSTERS TO WIN: The Roosters’ much-hyped physical forward pack will need to stand up and perform with the Rabbitohs possessing some tough hombres of their own in Sam Burgess, Dave Taylor and Michael Crocker. Halfback Mitchell Pearce will be keen to lift his game after a quiet Origin series and with opposite number Reynolds already being talked about for the Blues No.7 jersey next season. Jake Friend’s form has been consistent all season and his battle with Issac Luke is a key to the outcome of the match.
FOR THE RABBITOHS TO WIN: Souths coach Michael Maguire should prepare his side for a passionate and committed start from the home side who would love nothing better that to halt their top four charge. The Rabbitohs look to have the edge in most departments and their class will tell in the end if they can blunt the Roosters’ enthusiasm early. Reynolds will provide the direction again while Greg Inglis, Nathan Merritt and Andrew Everingham have plenty of points in them. TEAMS:
